In April 2019 Forbes reported this astonishing statistic that highlighted the global competition for talent. At the time, this statistic was valid — digitisation had opened up a global marketplace for talent and in Industry 4.0 top-tier talent sits at the heart of a company’s success. It made sense.

Fast-forward to August 2020 and according to the HMRC, 1.2 million employees have been furloughed at an astonishing £35.4 billion hit to the UK economy. Forbes reports that a further 750,000 people have lost their jobs, due to economic inactivity during the Covid-19 pandemic. LinkedIn’s feeds are inundated with amazing talent…

As the computerisation of industry unfolds, computers are becoming increasingly connected and communicate with each other to make decisions without human involvement.

A combination of cyber-physical systems, the internet of things and ubiquitous data is driving a new wave of industry. Industry 4.0 as coined by Forbes.

As technology keeps getting smarter, we build communities that are driven by data; processes in general become more efficient, less wasteful and productivity should improve exponentially. Ultimately its the collaboration and interconnectivity of digital machines creating and sharing information that results in the sheer power of this new paradigm. …

Pillars of Engagement

While the facets of digitisation continue to evolve and proliferate every aspect of human behaviour, communication remains the one constant in how people define and rate ‘experience’. Think about it, the right engagement creates understanding, understanding drives resonance and when that happens therein lies the metaphorical ‘ jackpot’.

Whether it’s sharing, posting or just branding — being able to effectively communicate the what, when, why and how online, has completely transformed not only human-to-human conversations, but also brand-to-user engagement.

There are a lot of consumer-centric buzzwords: ‘meaningful-engagement’, ‘personalisation’, ‘omnichannel journeys’, ‘experiential marketing’ etc constantly thrown into strategy and marketing conversations…

After a particularly horrible day at work, I like to spend my train ride home applying to 27 job adverts using the handy 1-click apply tool on LinkedIn. Even if I’m not the perfect fit for the job, I apply anyway. It’s stress relieving and pretty fun, sort of like swiping on Tinder. I’m not serious about the jobs I apply for–or the guys I swipe right on–but if it were to lead to something, I wouldn’t turn down a new opportunity.

But let’s be honest, when is the last time that actually happened?

Sure, now we can 1-click apply…

What is Colloquialism?

Generally speaking, colloquialism is the use of informal words, slangs or phrases in day to day communication. Colloquialism is always driven by the time or space in question, its associated cultural/social norms and the technology available at the set time.

The internet and Colloquialism

Digitalisation and the internet have had a profound effect on how we communicate with each other. The internet/social-media is an open-ended channel that facilitates, yet constrains our ability to speak in ways that fundamentally are different from verbal interaction (e.g the 140 character limit of a tweet).

In this context, many of the rules we previously associated with spoken language…

What is Talent Management?

Talent management is the strategic and consistent process of attracting, onboarding and retaining high-quality employees, by motivating them to improve their organisational performance and impact.

The primary purpose of talent management is to build and maintain a highly-motivated workforce that drives business growth.

How is Talent Management different from HR?

There are misconceptions that talent management is an alternative strategy for HR. However, talent management and HR are not two different approaches to the same goal, and you can’t pick one over the other; Every organisation has to do both.

Talent management is just one increasingly important HR functional category alongside three others: HR administration, HR service…
